UECE Conference
X INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM POWER DISTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD ECONOMY: NEW CHALLENGES

ISEG/UTL – School of Economics and Management/Technical University of Lisbon
Lisbon, May 28-29, 2013

UECE (Research Unit on Complexity and Economics) and ISEG, in collaboration with the University of Brasília (UnB), are organizing a two-day conference on "POWER DISTRIBUTION IN THE WORLD ECONOMY: NEW CHALLENGES". The main objective of the meeting is to provide a platform for productive exchanges between scholars on the new challenges of the world economy. Inequality within economies and in the global market is affected by the distribution of power between different groups in the national and global economies and the countries of the world. Changes in the distribution of power have arguably had a major impact on the economic performance worldwide in recent years. This conference will focus on how to analytically conceptualize power in the global context, explain the causes and consequences of shifts in the distribution of power, and explore what this implies for economic analysis and economic policy. Submissions on related issues are welcome.

A Brief History of the Conference

Following the successful experience of the '1997 International Colloquium' on Money, Growth, Distribution and Structural Change: contemporaneous analysis, and the organization of the '1999 International Colloquium' on Economic Dynamics and Economic Policy to show the consolidation of our efforts to stimulate and sustain a critical dialogue, the '2001 International Colloquium' on Structural Change, Growth and Redistribution was launched. The '2003 International Colloquium' tackled the theme Globalization, New Technologies and Economic Relations. All the above mentioned events took place in Brasília-DF, Brazil and counted with the support of other institutions and the collaboration of scholars worldwide. The results in terms of research networks were stimulating and productive. All of them led to the edition of their respective proceedings in book format and published in Brazil. Subsequently, this proposal extended its intercontinental projection with the organization of the '2005 International Colloquium', which took place in Treviso, Italy in a joint effort by the University of Brasília and the PRINT-PROJECT (endeavor involving several Italian universities), dealing with Dynamic Capabilities between Firm Organization and Systems of Production. As a result, the Routledge International Publisher edited a collection of papers in January 2008. In 2007 the 'VI International Colloquium' was organized by the University of Brasília in the capital of Brazil. The theme was Macrodynamic Capability and Economic Development. The assessment of the proceedings shows an emphasis on socioeconomic policies towards growth and distribution: Development with a Human Face. The '2010 International Colloquium' was successfully organized under the theme of Getting out of the Current Economic Crisis: In the Light of Alternative Development Paradigms by CEPN of the University of Paris 13 and Department of Economics of the University of Brasília at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme de Paris Nord. The event attracted attention worldwide. The VIII International Colloquium entitled Economic Growth, Structural Change and Institutions was organized jointly by the Department of Economics of the University of Brasília and J. E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics of National University of Ireland in Galway in May 2011. It was a meeting which collected an excellent group of scholars to deal with important contemporary issues. In 2012, Professor Heinz Kurz and his colleagues from the University of Graz, Austria accepted the invitation to organize the IX International Colloquium at Schumpeter Centre in collaboration with University of Brasília (UnB). The event produced contributions towards better understanding on Inequality and its Persistence. The main objective of the meeting was to provide a platform for productive exchanges of analysis and research results that focus on the theoretical and policy aspects of our inequality theme. The colloquium also aimed to stimulate exchanges of ideas across fields of inquiry from within the discipline of Economic Science, as well as between and among other related disciplines: so as to reinforce a multi-disciplinary approach to the study of Political Economy. In Graz it was the decided that we would make all effort to organize the X International Colloquium in the Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (ISEG) in Lisbon, Portugal, in collaboration with the University of Brasília (UnB), Brazil. We are happy to inform that the meeting will take place in May 28-29, 2013. The theme is Power Distribution in The World Economy: New Challenges. We will be concerned with new challenges of the world economy, the distribution of power between different groups in the national and global economies and the countries of the world. Changes in the distribution of power have arguably had a major impact on the economic performance worldwide in recent years. This conference will focus on how to analytically conceptualize power in the global context, explain the causes and consequences of shifts in the distribution of power, and explore what this implies for economic analysis and economic policy.

back to the top About Lisbon

Lisbon is the capital and largest city of Portugal. It is also the seat of the district of Lisbon and capital of the Lisbon region. Its municipality has a population of 564,477 in 84.8 km2, while the Lisbon Metropolitan Area in total has around 2.8 million inhabitants. Due to its economic output, standard of living, and market size, the Grande Lisboa (Greater Lisbon) subregion is considered the second most important financial and economic center of the Iberian Peninsula. The Lisbon region is the wealthiest region in Portugal and it is well above the European Union's GDP per capita average – it produces 45% of the Portuguese GDP. It is also the political center of the country, as seat of government and residence of the Head of State.

Lisbon was under Roman rule from 205 BC, when it was already a 1000 year old town. Julius Caesar made it a municipium called Felicitas Julia, adding to the name Olissipo. Ruled by a series of Germanic tribes from the 5th century, it was captured by Moors in the 8th century. In 1147, the Crusaders under Afonso Henriques reconquered the city for the Christians and since then it has been a major political, economic and cultural center of Portugal. Unlike most capital cities, Lisbon's status as the capital of Portugal has never been granted or confirmed officially – by statute or in written form. Its position as the capital has formed through constitutional convention, making its position as de facto capital a part of the Constitution of Portugal.

Lisbon hosts two agencies of the European Union, namely, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). The Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), is also headquartered in Lisbon.

The municipal holiday is June 13, St. Anthony's Day.
